Medical Protection [ back to top ]

The standard of public medical services in the Mainland may not measure up to the general expectation of Hong Kong people. Some hospitals require payment of deposits before services are provided. Moreover, service standard and sanitary condition vary among hospitals. To get the required level of medical services, you may consider approaching private or joint-venture clinics or hospitals which are of greater scale. To cater for emergency needs, it is highly recommended that medical insurance policies which cover medical expenses in the Mainland be taken out. Many medical insurance policies undertaken in Hong Kong cover medical expenses, emergency transportation and personal accident protection and so on. You may enquire with major insurers and banks about details of these medical insurance policies.

Public Security [ back to top ]

Public security conditions differ in different places over the Mainland. Public security conditions are good in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Nevertheless, individuals living in any unfamiliar places must pay extra attention to their personal safety. Hong Kong people working in the Mainland are advised not to go to crowded places as far as possible. They should also keep properties well attended at public places and not to expose precious articles and money. They should also avoid going out alone at night unless necessary. When coming across crimes, they should seek assistance from nearby police stations or call 110 for help.

Transportation [ back to top ]

The transportation system in the Mainland is sophisticated. Major cities are connected by railways. Train transport is economical and safe. However, the passenger demand for certain routes is great and it is rather time consuming to queue for tickets. It is therefore advisable to allow more time for ticket purchasing or alternatively, buy tickets through agencies. Aviation transport is well developed in the Mainland. Major cities are equipped with airports and flights are available among major cities. It is advisable to purchase air tickets through agencies in order to enjoy fare discounts. Regarding travelling within a city, underground trains are in service in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and ShenZhen. It is a convenient means to get to major places in the cities. Major locations in cities are accessible by public buses that are common in both big and small cities. Taxis are easily seen everywhere. In major cities, taxi fare, at about 2-3 dollars per km, is charged according to the meter. However, taxi fare may need to be negotiated in advance in smaller counties.
